The Department of Psychiatry at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) is seeking a motivated and dynamic Assistant, Associate or Full Professor for a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure accruing position as Residency Program Director. The Program Director will oversee the ACGME-accredited Psychiatry Residency Program, which includes approximately 40 residents involved in the care of patients across all psychiatry and subspecialty areas.

The Residency Program Director (PD) has full responsibility, authority, and accountability for program administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection; evaluation, promotion, and discipline; supervision; and faculty development in collaboration with the Vice-Chairs of Faculty Development and Education. The PD is charged with developing and maintaining a training plan aligned with ACGME Common and Program-Specific Requirements and ensuring that all aspects of the program meet accreditation standards.

Key responsibilities include:

1.        Program Leadership & Administration

a.        Oversee all operations of the psychiatry residency program in accordance with ACGME Institutional, Common, and Specialty Requirements.

b.        Develop and implement program policies, curricula, evaluation systems, and resident schedules.

c.        Lead program accreditation activities, including ACGME Self Study, Annual Program Evaluation (APE), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) efforts.

d.        In collaboration with the chair, manage program budget and resource allocation to support educational excellence,

e.        Leading a team of Associate Program Directors (APDs) by defining clear roles, scopes of authority, and expectations for overseeing key components of the residency while maintaining structural program alignment through regular leadership meetings.

f.           Provide direct mentorship, strategic guidance, and professional development opportunities to Associate Program Directors (APDs) to foster their growth as medical educators.

2.        Curriculum Development & Educational Oversight

a.        Design, implement, and continuously refine a competency-based curriculum that meets all ACGME requirements.

b.        Ensure high quality clinical, didactic, and simulation-based education across all training sites.

c.        Promote innovative teaching methods and evidence based psychiatric practice

3.        Resident Recruitment, Evaluation, and Mentorship

a.        Direct the resident recruitment and selection process through ERAS/NRMP.

b.        Oversee resident evaluation, Milestones reporting, and semiannual performance reviews.

c.        Provide individualized mentorship, career guidance, and support for residents.

d.        Ensure a safe, supportive learning environment that adheres to ACGME duty hour and well-being standards.

4.        4. Faculty Development & Engagement (in support of the department chair)

a.        Recruit, mentor, and evaluate program faculty

b.        Ensure faculty receive ongoing development in teaching, supervision, and evaluation.

c.        Promote a culture of professionalism and collaboration.

5.        Scholarly Activity & Academic Contribution

a.        Foster resident and faculty involvement in research, quality improvement, and scholarly dissemination.

b.        Participate in academic productivity, including publications, presentations, or educational innovation.

6.        Clinical Excellence

a.        Maintain an active clinical practice in psychiatry.

b.        Serve as a role model for high quality, compassionate, patient centered care.

The PD will receive a minimum of 0.50 FTE for administrative (non-clinical) program duties. The remainder of the time will be devoted to clinical care, including direct patient care and clinical teaching, with time allocated for research as appropriate for funded investigators. Prior experience working with residents and medical students is required. Cross-departmental collaboration and participation in interdisciplinary research are strongly encouraged.

Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry collaborate across the university and with national partners, offering rich opportunities for scholarly work and career development. There is also potential for leadership in developing specialized inpatient and outpatient services. As a member of the UW SMPH faculty, the successful candidate will contribute to the educational mission through teaching psychiatry residents, fellows, and medical students in both clinical and didactic settings. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to service at the departmental, college, and professional levels. This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

Minimum Qualifications:

·      M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of associate professor or higher.

·      Wisconsin medical license or eligibility for licensure, and active or eligible certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

·      Minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience.

·      The ability to effectively communicate with students, residents, fellows and employees from various backgrounds is required.

Preferred

·      Prior experience as a program director, associate program director, clerkship director, or other GME leadership role.

·      Experience with ACGME accreditation, curriculum design, and competency-based evaluation.

·      Record of scholarly activity and participation in academic psychiatry organizations.

Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at UW SMPH are involved in a broad range of clinical and research initiatives through departmental centers, labs, and interdisciplinary collaborations. The department includes a large outpatient service with various specialty clinics, growing inpatient and consult liaison service, a psychiatry collaborative care program for primary care providers, school-based consultation programs, and community mental health consultation services. The department offers clinical services and training in adult, child and adolescent, geriatric and addiction psychiatry.
