Please consider this meaningful opportunity to join the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) through teaching and leadership. MAHEC is a nonprofit organization established in 1974 to improve the training, retention, and quality of healthcare professionals in Western North Carolina, with a particular focus on rural and underserved communities. Based in Asheville, MAHEC serves a 16-county area in which many surrounding counties are predominantly rural, and integrates clinical care, graduate medical education, and health professions training to strengthen the regional healthcare workforce and advance population health.

In partnership with UNC Health Appalachian, we are seeking a Training Director for our Rural Psychiatry Residency in Linville, North Carolina. This role will blend clinical practice with academic leadership, offering the opportunity to shape and grow a rural psychiatry training program while providing high-quality psychiatric care to an underserved, rural region. The Training Director is employed by UNC Health Appalachian and is fully integrated into MAHEC's GME enterprise, working closely with MAHEC leadership and Department of Psychiatry Faculty.

Key Highlights:

  • Lead, implement, and oversee all aspects of the Rural Psychiatry Residency Program, including curriculum, recruitment, and resident development.
  • Maintain ACGME accreditation and ensure a high-quality educational environment.
  • Provide outpatient psychiatric care alongside program leadership responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with MAHEC GME leadership, UNC Health Appalachian, and community partners to advance rural mental health care.

This role offers the chance to deepen your leadership while making a lasting impact on behavioral health in Western North Carolina by mentoring future psychiatrists, shaping a growing rural residency, and strengthening the pipeline of clinicians serving our region.
