The Program Director (PD) position will be provided with 60% effort support during the planning, growth and initiation of the planned ACGME accredited program, with an inaugural class of 8 residents to start in July 2028 and grow in keeping with accreditation requirements as the complement increases to 32 over 4 years.
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and MUSC Health Florence are seeking an outstanding candidate for the role of Residency Program Director, to lead and grow a new Community Psychiatry Residency Program at the MUSC Health Leatherman Center for Behavioral Health in Florence, South Carolina, which is part of the MUSC Regional Health Network.
Based at the new Leatherman Center for Behavioral Health in Florence, the position will offer the opportunity to initiate and grow a new community-based Psychiatry Residency Program, finalize the curriculum, recruit and mentor psychiatry residents and participate in medical student education, leadership and clinical care in the MUSC Health system.
The PD will have responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, evaluation, and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action; supervision of residents; and resident education in the context of patient care, including compliance with all applicable program requirements for an ACGME accredited residency program. The program is based in MUSC Health Florence under the RHN Graduate Medical Education Office/DIO. The director will be responsible for the recruitment, supervision and evaluation of residents and core faculty as well as program evaluation, development and improvement under GME. The chosen candidate must be eligible for faculty appointment at the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine. The program will maintain an affiliate relationship with the MUSC College of Medicine and the Department Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The University Library and College of Medicine educational resources and departmental advisory support will be available to the Program Director.
Other responsibilities include:
· Program development, growth and adherence to ACGME accreditation standards
· Ensuring compliance with MUSC-Regional Network GME policies and procedures
· Didactic/clinical teaching and supervision of residents in the Psychiatry program
· Providing direct patient care as part of the faculty practice, including call coverage
· Participation in quality improvement and research programs and other collaborative activities within the MUSC community.
Candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate to groups at all levels within the organization, including students, residents in training, office staff, faculty, and senior leadership. In addition, candidates should display initiative, a positive attitude, flexibility, commitment to institutional goals and objectives, and must hold themselves and others to the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.
Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Graduation from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy
· Graduation from an ACGME accredited residency program
· Outstanding educational and administrative skills
· A minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in the field of medicine
· Current certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
· Three years of experience as Associate Program Director or Program Director in Psychiatry.
· Hold and maintain an unrestricted medical licensure in the State of South Carolina
· Hold and maintain an unrestricted DEA and SC- controlled substance registration
Preferred Qualifications:
· Regional or national leadership experience in medical education and GME
· Significant accomplishment in field-related scholarship

Plans for the Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion services include:
· A rapid access center to provide walk-in triage and assessment and offer transition to care.
· Telepsychiatry services to strengthen access to psychiatric services throughout the region.
· Sixteen adult and four adolescent beds for crisis services to rapidly stabilize patients.
· Intensive Outpatient / Partial Hospitalization Programs that provide counseling services and medication management for adults and adolescents.
· 63 inpatient psychiatric beds for those patients requiring additional acute hospital care.
