Membership Feedback About RRC Requirements
RRC Taskforce Process Overview
Intro
The AADPRT RRC Taskforce has been working for over a year to prepare a document that will be sent to the RRC in early fall, 2004. The document will contain all of the suggestions for changes in the current RRC Essentials (2001 version) that our organization endorses. Our internal process for input has been done in phases and has been open for input from our entire membership. The work, to date, is posted here and we invite any further comments you would like to make after reviewing this material. To add a new comment to the discussion concerning any of the RRC input items (the preliminary questionnaire, the survey data, or the letter to the RRC) click 'Post Input Feedback' on any of the pages about the RRC process. Complete the form on the RRC Input Feedback page—your comment will immediately be added and made available for others to see. Included here is a brief description of the Taskforce, text from the Questionnaire, the Survey data, comments on aspects of the survey from Taskforce members, and the letter I sent to the RRC prior to their April, 2004 meeting.
RRC Process
The RRC meets in October and again in April, 2005. They will be deciding on changes for the next version of the Program Requirements for General Psychiatry (i.e. "the Essentials") during that time. The Essentials are our roadmap for training all residents and a powerful influence on the evolution of clinical psychiatry. They are very important. We have enjoyed an outstanding working relationship with the RRC that continues now under the leadership of Michael Ebert, Chair and Sandra Sexson, Vice Chair. All of the information contained here is open for review by interested individuals (including members of the RRC and Chairs of psychiatry departments). The next step will be for the RRC Taskforce to prepare the document that goes to the RRC and present the details to the Executive Council for final discussion and approval at our September 9 meeting in Dallas.
RRC Taskforce
The Taskforce has worked to find ways to have as much input from our membership as possible. The process has included a ListServ discussion a year ago followed by a Questionnaire to our entire membership last fall. The comments in the Questionnaire are included on this site. A subgroup of the RRC Taskforce, chaired by Mark Servis, and called the Information Group, discussed the issues in depth and then wrote survey questions based on input from our membership. The Information Group included: Linda Andrews, Deborah Cowley, Arden Dingle, Marty Drell, Donna Sudak, Ed Volkman, and Catherine Woodman. Ike Ahmed also collated input from the subspecialty groups with suggestions from Joyce Tinsley and Jonathan Ritvo (Addictions), Cynthia Santos (Child and Adol.), Joeseph Layde (Forensics), Ike Ahmed (Geriatrics), and Maryjane Massie (Psychosomatic Medicine). Mark Servis and I put together the final survey which was sent out to all AADPRT members in January, 2004. The survey is presented here including the tabulated responses. We had an excellent response rate. For each response there are two numbers. The first (in bold) is the entire membership and the second is the general psychiatry training directors. Some areas of the survey show a clear majority consensus while others are divided or unclear.
The Document Group of this taskforce has been reviewing information throughout the process so far. This group will now write the draft of the document that will be presented to the Executive Council in September. It will contain our major input to the RRC. After it is approved it will be posted on this Website and sent to the RRC. There may be some further work following the RRC meeting in October. The members of the Document Group are: David Goldberg (chair), Ike Ahmed, Sheldon, Benjamin, Adrienne Bentman, Gene Beresin, Lisa Mellman, Mark Servis, Donna Sudak, and Grace Thrall. Consultants are: Carol Bernstein, Marty Drell, and Sandra Sexson.
AACDP Interface
In addition to our internal work and communication with the RRC we are also working with the Chair's group (American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry) on areas of joint interest with a focus on both competency requirements and research training (both research literacy and careers in research). Joel Silverman, current president of AACDP) and John Greden, incoming president, have been very supportive of this effort and more information about this will follow. We will also present RRC issues to the APA Council of Medical Education in September.
