About AADPRT

Peter Henderson, M.D., Memorial Award 2008

American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training

Introduction
The late Peter Henderson, MD, served as an active member on numerous AADPRT committees, and as the first child and adolescent psychiatrist to serve as President (1983-1984) of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training.   Dr. Henderson was specifically interested in nurturing and developing an effective link between child psychiatry and general psychiatry.  Because of initiatives developed by Dr. Henderson the vast majority of child and adolescent psychiatry programs are now represented in AADPRT, enhancing and expanding the areas of interest within graduate psychiatric education.  AADPRT now serves as an organization that addresses all major areas of graduate resident psychiatric education.

Objectives
It was the objective of AADPRT to develop a program memorializing Dr. Henderson ’s commitment to the organization and to psychiatry.  It is clear that many of the current members will not have known Dr. Henderson, but we honor the history of our organization and the input of its early contributors by creating an effective memorial that sustains the work that Dr. Henderson valued.  Therefore, to appropriately memorialize Dr. Henderson, AADPRT has established the following competition.

Qualifications
AADPRT will award a $500 prize for the best unpublished work in the general area of child and adolescent psychiatry.   In addition, the award recipient will be invited to attend AADPRT’s Annual Meeting at the Association’s expense.  The paper contest is open to current general psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry residents, and individuals who have graduated from general or child and adolescent psychiatry training programs within the last two years.

Paper Criteria
The paper must have been written while a general psychiatry resident or a child and adolescent psychiatry resident.   It cannot have been accepted for publication or published previously.  If the paper is co-authored, the resident submitting the paper must be the first author.  When/if the paper is published, the submitting resident must be the first author.  If the paper is co-authored the resident must also, on a separate sheet of paper, indicate his/her role in the production of the manuscript, provide fair estimates (percentage) of the contributions directly attributable to the resident and, in the event of a paper produced within the context of participation in a research group, indicate the nature of the resident’s responsibilities within that group.

The manuscript must be a scholarly paper contributing to the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.  The manuscript may be theoretical, data-based, a review of the literature, or case study.  Manuscripts related to psychiatric education are especially encouraged.  Regardless of type of paper, the Committee places highest priority on the resident’s role in the conceptualization and execution of the paper.  The submission is expected to adhere to a standardized pre-publication format (e.g. JAACAP, AJP, JAMA).  That is, an abstract will precede the remainder of the manuscript.  In turn, the ensuing components of the paper, whether of a research or discursive nature, will be divided into subject headings appropriate to its subject matter, inclusive of some or all of the following:  introduction, objective, method, results, discussion and conclusion.  The paper should be of publishable length (i.e., not to exceed 40 pages, excluding bibliography).  In order to assure anonymity when reviewing the papers, please be certain the name(s) of the author or co-authors do not appear on any pages of the manuscript.
